Adair’s story

about Adair

Adair Cates is a transformational trainer, facilitator, and coach with over two decades of experience in adult education, leadership development, and mindfulness.

She works with change agents, leaders, and women who sense that the next evolution of their work isn’t about doing more, but about becoming more resourced, more present, and more deeply aligned with what is true—for them, their energy, and the way they are designed to lead.

Her work lives at the intersection of neuroscience, embodiment, and conscious leadership—helping people lead, live, and relate from the inside out.

A different kind of leadership

As the driving force behind Conscious Leadership at xchange, Adair collaborates with a renowned faculty of experts including Rollin McCraty (HeartMath®), Raj Sisodia (Conscious Capitalism), Margaret Wheatley (Berkana Institute), Julianna Raye (Unified Mindfulness), and Lynne Twist (Soul of Money Institute).

Together, this work integrates neuroscience, mindfulness, breathwork, and relational intelligence to support leaders in developing not just new skills—but new ways of being.

Adair has designed and facilitated thousands of transformational conversations—both one-on-one and in groups—supporting individuals and organizations such as Conscious Capitalism, The Women’s President’s Organization, Microsoft, Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), Dr. Benjamin Hardy, TedX to unlock potential, strengthen well-being, and create meaningful, sustained change.

The work behind the work

For much of her early life, Adair was oriented toward movement and achievement—curious, driven, and deeply engaged with the world.

But beneath that drive was a quiet search for something more, a sense of home, belonging, and internal steadiness that couldn’t be found through accomplishment alone.

There came a period in Adair’s life when everything that once worked… no longer did.

Through the convergence of the pandemic, divorce, single motherhood, and the unexpected loss of her daughters’ father, she was brought into a season she could not think or strive her way through.

She had to slow down.
She had to be still.

And in that stillness, she began to cultivate something she had spent much of her life searching for outside of herself—a steady, grounded sense of inner home.

Through contemplation, reflection, and nervous system regulation practices, she learned how to meet life as it was—rather than trying to outrun or outwork it.

She also came to understand the quiet strength of supportive relationships—with herself, her children, her community, and even her finances—as sources of real stability and resilience.

Why this matters

Through these experiences, Adair came to understand something essential:

Sustainable leadership requires an inner home.

Without it, even meaningful work begins to extract more than it gives.

With it, leadership becomes grounded, ethical, relational, and deeply impactful.

This understanding now forms the foundation of everything she teaches.

Her Approach

Adair’s work is not about optimization, performance, or pushing harder.

It is about helping people:

  • slow down enough to actually hear themselves
  • regulate their nervous system in the midst of real life
  • build trust in their inner knowing
  • and lead from a place of clarity, integrity, and presence

Her approach blends:

  • neuroscience + nervous system regulation
  • mindfulness, breathwork, and reflection
  • conscious leadership frameworks
  • Human Design as a tool for alignment and self-understanding
  • Heartmath Resilience tools for bringing in heart intelligence
  • PSYCH K® unconscious belief reprogramming tools to release old patterns
  • and deep relational work
The result is transformation that is not just understood intellectually, but embodied and sustained over time.

The energy she brings

At her core, Adair brings the energy of a 1/3 Projector, someone designed to see deeply, guide wisely, and attune to what is truly needed beneath the surface.

As a Projector, her work is not about pushing or generating constant output, but about observing, understanding, and offering precise, meaningful guidance that creates real movement and change.

Her 1/3 profile brings a unique blend of curiosity and lived experience—an investigator who seeks to understand how things truly work, paired with a willingness to learn through real life, trial, and integration.

She weaves Human Design as a practical tool into her work, helping individuals better understand their natural energy, decision-making, and way of leading so they can stop forcing themselves into misaligned patterns and begin working with their design rather than against it.

Her work invites others into that same shift:

From forcing → to aligning
From over-functioning → to trusting their natural rhythm
From proving → to being deeply resourced and effective in the ways that are uniquely theirs

life as the practice

Beyond her professional work, Adair is a mother of twins and three bonus children, and partner in life and work to Jon Berghoff, founder of xchange.

Together, they steward Conscious Leadership programs while raising a blended family—where the real, daily practice of this work lives.

Because ultimately, leadership is not what happens in a workshop.

It’s what happens:
  • in the moments when no one is watching
  • in your relationships
  • in your home

an Invitation

If you’re someone who feels that the way you’ve been leading—or living—is no longer quite right…

If you sense that something deeper, more grounded, and more aligned is asking to emerge…

You’re not alone.

Many of the people Adair works with are thoughtful, capable, and deeply committed to making a difference.

And they also know:
to guide meaningful transformation in others, they must continue to live that transformation themselves.

Adair’s role is to walk alongside you as you:
slow down
listen more closely
and come back into alignment with what you know to be true

in your body, your leadership, and your work.

Closing

There is no formula here.

Only presence, discernment, and the courage to live what you teach and to be at your best.

If that resonates, I’d love to explore what support might look like—when the timing feels right.

With care,
Adair
